Hi Folks,
I%26#39;ll be taking my second trip to Vegas on July 22-26. My travel partner is wanting to rent a car and drive to the Grand Canyon. What do you all think of this plan? Is it do-able? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Driving to the Grand Canyonquite a few people do that... type grand canyon into the search bar... lots of people have other ideas/suggestions about how to visit grand canyon... heck, we%26#39;re driving from dallas to vegas and stopping @ the grand canyon... at least you only have a 5 hour drive!!
Driving to the Grand CanyonUnless you plan to spend the night in the GC area, I would suggest you leave LAS early, real early. Two reasons for this suggestion:
1. beat the heat and traffic
2. Gives you a full day nat the GC and believe me, you want at least a full day there.
We did this in April 2005. When we left Vegas the temperature was in the mid 80%26#39;s and when we got to the Grand Canyon it had dropped to the low 40%26#39;s. Talk about looking like idiots-we all had on shorts! But it was definitely worth the drive, its beautiful.
Definitely leave at midnite to arrive at dawn to enjoy the day.
Leave after6 pm and drive back at nite.
If you stop along the Hwy, watch out for rattle snakes. They come too the warm road at nite for warmth.
well worth doing but stay overnight - we did it last year and took in some route 66 - stayed at El Tovar right on the rim
you really have to see the sunset and sunrise - both awesome
Thanks all for your replies!
Agree with solobay. We have done it twice. It is a 5 hour ride to the Canyon. A stay overnight is the best way to do it. Well worth the ride. Pull up the Naional Park site and check out lodging. It might be to late to get a place on the rim unless there is a cancellation. El tovar is the best IMO. We also stayed at Bright Angel.
Sunrise was very nice but Sunset I think is awsome. Be sure your gas tank is full when you leave both places. You can always fill up and get snacks in Klingman.
Either way have fun. Oh yea, Check out Williams AZ there is a train that takes you to the Grande Canyon. My girlfriend did that this year and had a lot of fun!
