My husband has a conference at tha Mandalay Bay in early March and we would like to find a medium priced hotel within walking distance with access to the Strip as well. It would be much appreciated if anyone could recommend one .

The Luxor is right ajoins the Mandalay Bay and during the week you can often find a rate around $65-$70. per night. Check out their website and check the dates you will be in Vegas and you will see a calendar with rates. The Excalibur adjoins the Luxor and their rates may even be less than the Luxor. There is a tram that runs from the Excalibur to the Luxor to Mandalay. I prefer the Luxor over Excalibur, so if you can get a decent rate at the Luxor I would go with that. March is a great time to go to Vegas, have fun.

Thanks for your information and will look at those hotels in detail. We were interested in the Orleans but wonder if it is too far to walk to Mandalay. Any thoughts on this?
Hi. The Orleans is way too far to walk. You can get reasonably priced hotels on the strip - if you look at standard sites such as Ebookers or Expedia they will give you an idea of the general prices and you can then shop around for the best. In March it will be cool enough for you to walk along the strip, the monorail should finally be up and running (hopefully), and the 24 hour strip bus service is excellent especially at only $5 for a day pass so you will have good access to all areas, so if you stay further north than Mandalay Bay it will be easily accessible. I have visited Vegas 7 times and if your time there is limited I feel it is best to stay on the strip. Don%26#39;t know if you are aware, but Mandalay Bay is the furthest south of the %26#39;major hotels%26#39; so you may wish to be a bit further north anyway. Hope this helps.
Great thanks a lot. It will be our first visit to Vegas so this forum is excellent to learn about the area. i see you too live in Essex - small world. Have you always stayed in the same hotel in Vegas or do you shop around for the best deal. Thanks a lot for your reply.
Hi, my husband and I have stayed at several hotels, mainly the older 3* basically because there is quite a jump in prices to the 4* - on personal experience 4* have fancy curtains, marble bathrooms and more TV channels. If you just want cleanliness and a comfortable room then the 3* are fine. I have noticed from this site that a lot of people are very critical of the cheaper hotels, I think sometimes peoples expectations are a little high. For 锟斤拷20 a night we stayed at the Riviera this year for 5 nights - staff were wonderful, room, bedding, towels were clean and it is in a reasonable location, yet most of the reviews on this site class it as a dump. We then moved to TI for 6 nights at a reduced rate of 锟斤拷72 per night - over 锟斤拷50 a night more, yes it had all the trimmings but the staff were rude, you could hear everything going on next door through the connecting door and really for the extra 锟斤拷50 per night it really was a waste as we could have spent that money on something else. Don%26#39;t get me wrong there are hotels we would not consider staying at, the majority of which are in the seedier parts of downtown. I am going back in January for a short %26#39;girls%26#39; trip and we have chosen the Sahara - not the best location as it is right up the north end of the strip, but I spoke to a maintenance man from the Riviera when I was there in Sept who had just left working at Sahara and he said the rooms are similar, and slightly better maintainted than at the Riviera. And at 锟斤拷405 for flights and 5 nights I am more than happy to stay there. Don%26#39;t forget, if you are unhappy with a room you ask to change. We have had to do this on 2 previous occasions, if you are polite the hotel staff are very accommodating. On the first occasion we were upgraded to a suite - now you don%26#39;t get that in the UK!
I have to agree with you on people having such high expectations. I love reading all these reviews. How can the same hotel get total praise from one person and get completely trashed by the next. A hotel doesn%26#39;t change THAT much. Now, the reason they could give it a bad review is due to the housestaff, which changes quite often, I%26#39;m sure. but all in all, I think its your personal expectations of the place that writes the review. If you expect marble bathrooms, plush carpets and fancy bedspreads and its not like that, then you%26#39;re unhappy with it. If you don%26#39;t care about the room as long as its clean, then your experience can be so much more enjoyable.
Patti - just for reference, with regards to my last commet, the system doesn%26#39;t seem to recognise pounds signs - all the figures I have given are GBP
