I have checked other posts and I would like to know why many people say El Cortez is a bad place to stay? Yes it is not a hotel like you would find on the Strip. We have stayed at El Cortez several times. The rooms are very clean and nice for the price. The area is so so. (directly around El Cortez it is ok) We have never had a problem walking to where the action is on Fremont street. We have stayed at the Vegas Club %26amp; Plaza (Vegas Club had a punch hole in the wall in our room) Both places were a dump the rooms were dirty %26amp; in very worn %26amp; poor shape. The rooms at El Cortez (Pavilion) were very clean we also stayed in Vintage rooms and they were ok. (Small) I would like to know those who say Don%26#39;t stay at El Cortez Have they stayed and when was the last time they stayed.
El Cortez Not Bad
A lot of people here love the El Cortez. I%26#39;d stay there again if they had a swimming pool (or if I visit in the winter), and I%26#39;ve had nothing but a great time gambling there.
But still, you gotta admit, the motel-annex-type setting of the Pavilion Rooms is kinda weird unless you know in advance what you%26#39;re getting into.
El Cortez Not Bad
Drake,
Yes I will agree about the pavilion rooms if you did not know you might be a little surprised.

No offense, but the fact that you willingly stayed at the Plaza and the Vegas Club leaves me no choice but to question the value of your advice! LOL!
Stratton,
I do take offense!! How can you question someones advice by the place they stay? Different people like different things. Have you ever stayed at the Plaza, Vegas Club or El Cortez? You have no right to judge peoples advice that stay somewhere you don%26#39;t like.
Not all people can afford the strip hotels. But still can have a great time and enjoy Las Vegas on a budget. You have a very closed mind.

Dennis,
I think you%26#39;ll find most of the posters here who bash a given hotel have, in fact, never stayed there. They may have walked through the casino or maybe even had a meal, but they%26#39;ve never overnighted.
Most, just read reviews and trip reports and then ';advise'; others based on a third or fouth party opinion.

This is a forum so people have the right to comment as long as they stay within the guidelines. Aren%26#39;t you judging his advice?

I agree with DrVegas but I also think he is guilty of posting comments without backup or knowing what he is talking about.
Having said that.
I have been to my brothers room at El Cortez and the place was not nice. It was not clean but it was cheap and that is all he cared about. Even he said he would not stay there again. I prefer Main Street Station if I go downtown.
Vegas Dragon,
I understand what you are saying and I agree with somethings you are saying but to question your choice of advice because of the place you stay is rude and close minded. I understand the guidlines for postings but people can be nice.

Ok kids, no fighting.
I have not stayed at the El Cortez but my dive trip partner The Mailman has and he walked me through the place. He pointed ut the long stairway to the ';vintage'; rooms and said they are smoky but ok.
We stayed at the Gold Spike that trip and he said the ';vintage'; rooms at the El Co were similar.
In August, I saw security settle a shoving match between 2 bar patrons by tossing them both outside where they continued the argument on the street and Metro stopped by and took them away.
We plan to stay in the Pavilion rooms at the El Cortez in March, 2007 and will report then.. I will reserve judgment until then.

That I will agree with :%26gt;}
Actually my friends and I just got back from two nights at the El Cortez. We stayed two nights at the Flamingo, then two nights at the El Cortez in the Flamingo rooms. I stayed there about a year before in the Tower rooms.
The tower rooms were great, and I tried to upgrade again, but it was bikefest downtown and they were completely sold out. The Pavillion rooms were not as big as the Tower rooms, and they were motel style; but both rooms were very clean and nicely furnished. Except for the small and purely functional bathrooms, they were quite nice. I%26#39;ve never stayed in/seen the vintage rooms.
About a year and 1/2 ago the El Cortez remodeled all their rooms, as well as parts of their casino. The casino is a lot nicer/brighter now. I didn%26#39;t see any of the rooms pre-remodel, but they seem pretty nice post remodel.
My friends had never stayed there before, and were skeptical, but I convinced them to trust me on this one. I asked them all afterwards and they all said they liked it (one even ';loved'; it) and would definately stay there again. No one felt uncomfortable in the area either. We%26#39;re all professional females in our 20%26#39;s to 40%26#39;s and really enjoyed it.
I think that some of the deragatory comments come from either pre-remodel stays or from people expecting fancy rooms for $35/night.
