Plaza or El Cortez?

I have heard horror stories about both and found people who like both. El Co is about 75 cheaper for the 5 days. All i need really is a place thats clean and bug free to lay my head between gambling and drinking sprees. Any suggestions?

Plaza or El Cortez?

I would choose the Plaza personally. They are closer to the action downtown (right at the apex of the freemont st. experience and closer to the Main St. Station that has microbrews and good food), and it%26#39;s an easier and less scary stumble home at night. I also think they have a more expansive gaming area and there are also some quick fast food options in the place for quick snacks if you so desire. One knock was that the gaming floor smelled funny, but they did replace carpet, and I did not notice anything of the kind this past June. Also, the Plaza has one of the only accessable taxi stands in the area if you want to venture to the strip, etc.

Plaza or El Cortez?

I have stayed in both. The location of the Plaza is better. However, the tower rooms at the ElCortez are really nice. All new furniture, carpet and draperies. The Plaza rooms are quite worn. But either will be fine, so it depends on what is most important to you.

loomis...although I have much respect for Mark and his status as a hockey coach (I was once one) I have to disagree with his statement aboot the area. The worst thing you will see is some down and outters, homeless people, ';ladies'; of the evening and a few generally irresponsible people on the short 2 block walk to the FSE from El Cortez and back. I have been to South Bend and know you have the same there. Difference being, the police presence in Vegas will be much stronger. If your name is any indication of your age, you should be just fine. We had reservations at the Orleans ($25 p/n) and actually switched to the ElCo tower for the same $25 price.

If you end up at ElCo or Plaza either one, we should try to find a place to meet downtown and swill some libations.

The area doesnt scare me...been to EL CO before to gamble, day and night. I generally tend to not be messed with much as i have been told i look like a cop...(not sure if its my short hair or love for doughnuts) The tower rooms look nice now that they have been refurbished and you cant beat the price. DrVegas, swilling some libations sounds like a good idea since im travelling solo this trip. (hopefully you mean MANY by saying ';some';) I am going to book The EL tomorrow and will arrive the afternoon of the 10th and leaving early morning of the 15th.

I just came back from a one night stay at the Plaza. The rooms are very outdated, old beds, old bedding and the bathrooms are something else, very small, you can hardly get into the bathroom, spent the next 4 nights at Main Street Station - WOW what a difference, great rooms and clean. Went to the El Cortez to play a free machines, it is cheaper to play video poker and keno there, takes 4 coins instead of 5 and you can win the same, the casino looked somewhat clean. You do have to walk a block or two from freemont street and if you just keep walking I do not think you would run into any problems. I would not suggest the Plaza.

Unless the Plaza has changed in six months..it smelled....really bad..like pee and vomit and goodness knows what ,,,IN the casino....please reconsider both choices...you can do better...yikes!

H3ll yeah glad to hear you%26#39;re booking with the fabulous El Cortez.

We get in late (10pm) on the 10th so we won%26#39;t be at ElCo until 11 or so.

I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll be up to doing whatever by Midnight.

Yeah, when I said swilling, I meant many. We are professional drinkers. My wife hates gambling so i always go with friends and the party is on.

Gotta love Downtown!

Stayed an extra couple of nights in Vegas a two years ago with my wife and daughter and we got the Plaza for a good price. Free would have been better. Room was large but worn and needed a good cleaning. Wife and daughter were not pleased to say the least as they hate downtown and prefer the Strip. Even if free, I wouldn%26#39;t go back. Just something about that place that I hate. The buffet was the worst I have ever had. Horrible. Dealers are totally creepy and I never seem to get very far ahead of them and when down it seems almost impossible to get even again. Even the carpet is creepy. Only good thing about our stay at the Plaza was a Full-Tilt Poker tourney and I saw alot of the biggies. I am going back to Vegas solo next month and will not include the Plaza on my Black Jack crawl.

On the other hand I always like stopping by the ElCo. I like the atmosphere. Dealers are friendly, BJ seems to be a fair game. Never eaten there but will try it some day. After all the good reports about the tower rooms on this forum, a stay at the El Cortez is on my must do in Vegas list. My Dec trip is being split between a couple of $25 nights at the Orleans and a freebie at the Freemont.
