Trip report Part 1
Just got back and had a great time. The rough itinerary is as follows: I would be flying down on Tuesday and getting picked up by my friend who lives down there – we’ll call him LD. We were going to play golf in Mesquite on Wednesday and Thursday and I would arrive at the Flamingo Thursday night and spend the rest of the trip on the strip until I left on Sunday.
So anyway, flight down was fine. Flew down econo on Alaska. Have they made these seats smaller or is my a$$ growing? Actually I’m going with smaller seats – seriously. These were tiny! I’m not overweight at all but a decent sized guy of about 6’2” and 220lbs and I was quite cramped – which happens a lot in the leg department but not so often in the seat department. So, after squeezing in between the armrests, I of course had to extract myself because a guy and his wife needed to get by me. No worries so I just repeated the process and they sat down. A couple of pluses – they were very nice and happy to chat with me about Vegas and life in Portland – and they wanted me to call them about some issues that I help people with as my job when we got back so I may have picked up a client. Fine. Unfortunately it wasn’t all roses. First of all, the guy was a man who wasn’t apparently adverse to close contact with another man – not that there’s anything wrong with that!! I, on the other hand, do not like to be touched by another man so when I sit in a plane – or anywhere for that matter, I tend to do my best to avoid skin on skin contact with strange men…and unattractive women for that matter. Mostly I just make a point to respect another person’s space. So he sits down and immediately digs his elbow into my ribs (I knew I should have claimed the armrest first!!) and spreads his legs so our calves are firmly together and beginning to create a slick buttery lather. I immediately recoil and now my cramped knees are pressed tighter together than a young lady graduating from Ms. Propers finishing school. He instantly seizes the empty space and once again we’re working on a buttery lather and there’s really nothing I can do. At least the flight’s a short one.
The second downside is that they’re both horrid flyers. Upon take off, I received another firm ribshot and looked over to see them both with their eyes closed – not closed like sleeping but squeezed so tight their eyelids were white from the pressure. Fortunately we don’t crash – they seemed quite surprised – and the drink lady begins to come around so they can begin self-medicating. And they do. And it doesn’t seem to help. We’re carrying our pleasant conversation with the wife making bedroom sounds every time the plane dips or shifts. It was actually a little entertaining at first but I started thinking about the drop into Vegas which is normally pretty rough and I was a little concerned. Sure enough, the decent was typical and the poor lady gave a vocal performance that Jenna Jamison would have been proud of.
On to the trip…
Tuesday night was not very exciting although I did find a beer with lime and salt flavoring already in it. Stop rolling your eyes. I like real beer and I actually bought it as a joke for the friends I was staying with. Sort of like bringing a box of wine to a wine tasting party. Surprisingly it was quite good and went down nicely.
Wednesday – on to the parts you all might care about….
Up early and headed up to Mesquite. It’s about an hour and 17 minute drive and not very exciting. We were staying at Eureka Hotel and Casino and playing Falcon Ridge today. Checked into the Hotel and it reminded me of the Indian Casinos up here. Room was typical of a Motel 6 or Best Western. Nothing wrong and nothing special. They did have a nice pool area that we didn’t use. On to golf. Falcon Ridge is nice enough – nothing super special but just a typical resort course. We basically had the course to ourselves which is nice and allowed us to whip around in about 3 and a half hours. We had an 11:30 tee time today and were done by 3:00. The temp I think was around 107 degrees or so. A note on the heat. I, being from Portland, am definitely not used to the heat but to be honest, it wasn’t an issue at all over the entire trip. I was a little concerned about dehydration on the golf course but it really wasn’t an issue. We drank plenty of water and were really quite comfortable the entire time.
Headed back to the casino. One of the perks here is that upon check-in, the hotel gave us these cards that would get us free drinks at any of the bars in the place. Kind of cool and we took full advantage of it with Long Island iced teas and shots of Patron. A part of me said that starting with shots at 3:00 in the afternoon with no place to go for the night and a round of golf the next day was a bad idea – another shot of Jaeger erased that concern. Played some slots and vp – lots of good pay tables here. Donated $200 on the craps table and signed up for a slot tournament – to get the free buffet that came with it. Ate at the buffet and it was surprisingly good. Not Bellagio, Paris, Wynn good but better than the feed barns they have up here. Continued taking full advantage of the free alcohol and then went to the slot tourney. Never did one before. First of all, we (mid 30s) were the youngest participants by 30 years. Seriously. There were walkers and oxygen tanks and wheel chairs throughout. Kind of sad but I guess it’s good that they’re still out having fun. Back to the tournament. So basically I sat there and hit a button for 10 minutes only to find out that my point total was about one eighth of the needed total to get to the money. Still – not bad for a free buffet.
Continued losing and drinking which will be pretty much the theme for the trip….On to Thursday and Wolf Creek and the Flamingo maybe later tonight.
