El Cortez

Has anyone stayed at this hotel before? It%26#39;s located at south south fremont st and it has 3 stars,is this too far from the strip? How is the hotel? And the service? Thanks!

El Cortez

22$ a night!??

El Cortez

My friend stayed there, he didn%26#39;t like it. The Tv didn%26#39;t work, and he said the room was really noisy. They moved him (eventually). I%26#39;ve been into the casino, it looked old and needed some work.

The Ritz it%26#39;s not, but I hear they have cleaned the place up. If you just need a place to sleep and shower, it should be ok. The dealers are all working their first job in a casino. Don%26#39;t expect a lot of flash from them. One person tipping a few $ when they win can make a BIG difference here. The dealers average under $30 a day in tips.

I was there in the fall. Rooms were clean and TV worked. It is pretty far from the strip. Either Cab, car or bus to get to the strip.

If you type it in the ';search'; box you will find the reviews. Most of them are very good.

The $22 room is possibly in their older section - above the parking garage. there is a newer ';Tower'; section where the rooms are nicer and not too much more expensive.

We don%26#39;t stay there as we have an arrangement at the Golden Nugget , which is 4 * and usually get a room for $69 weekdays., but we love to gamble there. The El Cortez is about a one block walk beyond the canopy of Fremont Street. You pass some empty store fronts , a few little lunch counter type restaurants, a cocktail lounge or two and a few stores/pawn shops that sell cheap watches etc. It%26#39;s not a dangerous walk, but one time out of twenty there may be a street person who will softly ask if you can spare any change and amble away if you ignore him. It is certainly not a place of aggressive panhandling ( like in San Francisco) and if you are comfortable in that situation , you will be fine walking outside there- but do upgrade to a tower room. Also, don%26#39;t wander beyond the El Cortez or on the side streets near it as they are not as safe, especially after dark.

If you decide not to stay ther, I do recommend the gambling- low minimums for table games ($3-5 blackjack, quarter roulette, etc) I have found the cocktail service very generous.

They have fixed it up quite a bit of late. We were just there last Tues- Friday and plan to go back again in June. Some of the ';regulars'; were speaking of the good food in their more ';upscale'; dining room, Roberta%26#39;s- there is also an ok Coffee Shop, Kitty%26#39;s and also a Subway and a Seattle%26#39;s Best right in the casino. The regulars don%26#39;t have good thinks to say about the breakfast ';buffet'; or the Chinese ';buffet '; ( I think the same chef does both with poor results) For a low roller looking for economy , it can certainly work. To call it three star might be a stretch- I%26#39;d call the place as a whole two star in general, but those tower rooms might be more in the three star realm.

RU Sure: Didn%26#39;t you work there (El Cortez) in the early days of your career?

Or several other places downtown before you ended up at the Stardust? lopez: I used to get free nights at the Cortez, be sure you stay in the Tower with a strip view...don%26#39;t settle for the hotel over the parking garage or the smoke filled rooms by the casino...certainly not a 3 star hotel....good food, except for the breakfast buffet and the chinese buffet...avoid those...you can get the duece bus to the strip, cost 2 bucks or 5 bucks for a 24 hour pass...don%26#39;t even consider that you will be close to the strip unless you think that a half-hour or more on the bus is close....couple blocks from the canopy area of Fremont...not a great place at night, but never had a problem....

El Cortez - it is a distance from the Strip... It%26#39;s just outside of the Fremont Street Experience (Downtown) area.

Would I recommend it - it%26#39;s not the first one that comes to mind - matter of fact it doesn%26#39;t come to mind anytime someone asks where to stay if we are sold out.....

I think if you want to be near the strip - you can find better accomodations - just not at $22 a night. If your looking for a rate that low and closer to the strip - maybe the Stratosphere or even Circus - Circus - their not the best rooms in town, but they are the ';best value'; on the strip.
