Gold Spike/Western Hotel/El Cortez

Am trying to decide between Gold Spike Hotel and Casino , Western Hotel and Casino and El Cortez Hotel and Casino. All I am looking for is cheap, clean, AC rooms with parking for just 1 night. Any suggestions/experiences with any of the above?

Gold Spike/Western Hotel/El Cortez

Leave the Western out of the equasion for a room, just gamble and drink there. Of the other 2, go with the El Cortez if you clearly understand the area you are in is not the best. But you will be fine in the casino and the general area as long as you are not looking for trouble.

An El Cortez tower room is the way to go. Pavilion rooms are cheaper, but are part of a motel annex built on top of the parking garage (well, that might work for you too, come to think of it.)

Leave the Western out of the equation!!!!

Either GS or EL. both have the same owners, renovated at the same time, and with same appointments.

Best trip report ever from the Western http://www.bigempire.com/vegas/19dollar1.html

Ahh the Fremont Triangle, I have been lost in there more than once.

Stayed at the Gold Spike. the room was old and shabby but clean and no bugs, the staff tried to do their best with what they had. If I had to do so again I would with no problems staying there but it is not on the top of the list.

Staying at the El Co in a few weeks I have no doubt that I will enjoy it.

Western is the worst to the three, I drank and played there but even I have never had the guts to stay there but a nice lady I met at the bar there wanted to show me her room but I didn%26#39;t want to pay the admission fee so I can only go on what the late great Stinky said about the room..

I think that the Western and Gold Spike have the same owners as the Plaza and supposedly you can use the pool there..

Avoid the Good Day Inn.

I always stay at the Nugget in LV but last fall my Buddie was at the El C while I was at the Nugget. He had a vintage room. Tiny but clean quiet and newly redone. It was great. I could hang down in the casino and play BJ and run up to his room within 3 minutes. Try that at the MGM. Plus while at the El C hit the barber. Great cut only one better is at the Art of Shaving in Mandalay. Only the El C barber is $75 less!

WOW!!!!!. a mistake from VHB. Must be the first ever.

Jackie Gaughan did own The ElCo, Spike, Western, Las Vegas Club and Plaza (as well as a few other downtown motels and parcels of land). In 2004 he sold everything except the ElCo %26amp; Ogden House to The Barrick Gaming Corporation. (More accurately a partnership between Tamares, a Lichtenstein company and Barrick). Since the sale of his Downtown properties (for about $78m), Jackie has invested heavilly in the El Cortez while the other Barrick/Tamares properties have gradually gone down hill.

The ElCortez is now far superior to any of the Barrick properties even if it is not on FSE.

Snake is correct. El Co is way nicer than the other 2 hotels and about the same price. Book a tower room if you stay here.
